Lesley Nelson is on Leave
Our dear Lesley Nelson is on personal leave for the next few months to rest and heal. Please send her virtual hugs and prayers for healing. We hope that she will be back to Birthstream catching babies and sharing her warm smile and heart for serving families as soon as possible.
Welcome, Midwifery Assistant, Raashnay Hundley!
We are very happy to welcome Raashnay into the Birthstream family in a new role as a Midwifery Assistant this summer! The role of the Midwifery Assistant is to assist the Licensed Midwife during birth and immediate postpartum. She can assist us in all the typical responsibilities at birth under our supervision, but direct clinical care such as catching the baby or doing the newborn exam will be done by the midwives. We know she will be a wonderful help to us and our families during the upcoming months!
Here is an introduction, in her own words…
My interest in Midwifery care started with my first pregnancy in 2009, having a baby in the comfort of your home just seemed more logical. I did not plan well or research the possibility so my eldest and second daughters were born in the hospital. After the birth of my second daughter and some complications from the epidural, I made up my mind that if i ever got pregnant again i would have a home birth.
In 2014, I became pregnant with my third daughter, I knew she would be born at home! A family member of mine gave me Birthstream Midwifery’s contact information and I set out to meet with them to possibly be my midwives. Nine months later I had a healthy baby girl in the comfort of my home with exceptional care from kind women.
Pregnancy and birth have always been an interest of mine from a very young age. I just never really knew where I fit in the birth world. On August 7th, after my sweet baby's arrival, I knew that the care I was given was something I wanted to give to other women. Having a strong will to be a helping hand to those in need and desiring to help in any way that I may be available, I had my first surrogacy journey in 2017. Still trying to figure out exactly where to start my birth work and contemplating taking on the full responsibility of a midwife, I began researching the different roles women take in the birth community.
Monday, after July 4th 2020 I was sent a text about a woman (Kaleem Joy, LM, CPM) teaching a Midwifery Assistant class. I was lucky enough to get into the intimate class of 5 women. In the midst of learning, it became more and more apparent to me that I had found my “home”. I am just beginning my journey to midwifery and I am grateful and humbled that Birthstream is willing to give me the opportunity to assist them with birth and are allowing me to continue my growth as an Midwife Assistant.
